«"Fiesta de la Chola" – Cuenca Identity and Naïve Acrylic Art
On the canvas titled «"Choliday Party"», Artist Ivanna M. offers us a beautiful and contemporary window into the folklore of southern Ecuador. Far from the rigidity of traditional costumbrista portraits, the work merges the human element of our iconic Cuenca chola with geometric and musical abstraction, transforming the painting into a visual poem of color and belonging.
✨ Key artistic highlights of the piece:
-
Symbolism and Local Identity: The female figure stands out for her large, expressive eyes, full of innocence, and wears the typical Azuay attire: her braids adorned with ribbons, a toquilla straw hat, a white blouse, and the classic embroidered red skirt. Her hand rests gently on the neck of a stylized guitar, connecting the figure to the rhythm and melody of the pasacalles and tunes of our highlands.
-
Vibrant Geometric Composition: The guitar's soundbox deconstructs at the bottom into a hypnotic, segmented circular mandala. Inside, purple arches, intense fuchsia petals, and a green section containing spherical shapes reminiscent of golden fruit coexist, suggesting the abundance of the earth and the expansion of musical notes in the plaza.
-
* Chromaticism in Absolute Contrast: The work boasts a wise thermal balance. A sky and hills textured in deep, pure blues serve as a cold backdrop for the warm yellows, oranges, reds, and fuchsia of the central character to burst forth with absolute luminosity, filling the room with a revitalizing luminous vibration.. The well-defined black lines delineate the shapes with a human and sincere touch, demonstrating the incalculable value of the authentically handcrafted versus the uniformity of mass-printed sheets
